This is the page for you to send me details of your RWD Ford ZETEC conversions.  Please e-mail me if you want a feature.

The first car to feature is owned by Jon Lawes.

The engine is from a Mondeo and is a 1.8, with cams from an RS1800 to uprate to 130 bhp spec.

He used a standard Mondeo 1.8 clutch, which has the same number of splines as the type 9 gearbox, and thus bolted straight up. The clutch release bearing is part number CT133 (He think this is a capri part, it is longer than the other bearings available and therefore operates the clutch more effectively). Again, this fitted with no mods (He is sure this is a quirk of the 1.8, everyone he had spoken to using a 2 litre was having no end of troubles). The type 9 gearbox was fitted with an RS2000 alloy bellhousing, with the standard sierra clutch release arm (with that all important release bearing mounted in it).  On the opposite side to the starter motor a clutch cable mount from Retro Ford was used to make up for the fact that the RS2000 has a clutch cable mount on the sump where as the Zetec did not.  He then procured an RS2000 speedo cable from ford, and a clutch cable from Retro Ford. The spigot bearing he used in the flywheel (no modifications again! god bless the 1.8!) is Ford part number 1596468 which is available over the counter at the parts desk. An RS2000 single piece prop shaft was sourced, but don't forget that the RS2000 prop has a different flange on the diff, and you need that too. He found the change on mine was very simple and straightforward, not counting the oil that ran up my sleeve when I pulled the old flange out of the diff.  Although, you must be careful to re-torque the bolt to the ford specifications afterwards.

A Retro Fords alternator kit was used, but he is still having some problems getting it to fit (can someone past an solutions on the forum please?). Heis sure that is something he is doing wrong as everything else he has got from Retro Ford has been superb (We cannot recommend the guy enough). He also used the Retro Ford water rail kit (Ed: like me), but found that when he fitted the engine (through the top of the engine bay, because people told me it couldn't be done) He had to remove it to get enough clearance to let the engine drop in. Retro Ford engine mounts where also used and were found to be a very neat installation indeed (Ed: agreed). But the neatest item he used from retro ford was the sump. Retro ford supply some genuine ford sealant with their sumps; don't do what he did and apply it before you have checked everything is ok in there. You won't ever get the sod off. The sump came painted already, but  got another coat from just in case.  The exhaust manifold from Ashley which came from TJMotorsport.co.uk as they were the cheapest (Ed: Must agree, great company).  He purchased a new water pump from an Escort Zetec on ebay for about a tenner (make sure you get one from an escort and not a Mondeo). The mondeo, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 engines all run the water pump the wrong way (Ed: must say I have only ever heard of the 2ltr being a problem, but it never hurts to check). This is because the drive is off the BACK of the serpentine drive belt. The escort  pump runs a grooved pulley, not a smooth one, and this runs the correct way. The water pump on the Mondeo has its exit pipe coming off at an angle, wheras the escort unit has a straight outlet. More on this can be found here http://www .zetecinside.com/xr2/zetectune.htm. Of course, the impeller will spiral in a different direction too, so just compare to your mondeo unit. You will need to source a grooved pulley for the water pump as well.

The induction and fuelling is going to be done buy Jenevy throttle boddies (Ed: Nice) and Emerald management.

The standard radiator will be kept short term to save some cash, it could well be fine. In front of the radiator is a Fiat Uno fan, which will be control off the thermostatic switch on the RetroFord water rail (which is supplied with the kit!).

All that is left to sort out is the gearbox mounts and moving the gearstick hole.

The next Escort belongs to Graham Low
